Solidarity in Surprising Places
You know, at peace marches, you expect to hear horns honking as motorists drive by. And it is not surprising for folks on the sidewalk and in the passing busses to give you a peace sign or a thumbs up. Even the hotel guests looking out their windows or the janitor cleaning the interior windows of the highrise did not shock me with their signs and shouts of support. But I wasn't expecting to see the Chicago policeman, in riot gear, wink at me. Craig suggests that maybe he was just flirting (in which case, I probably shouldn't have winked back). But I like to think this was his way of saying, "I can't march with you. I can't even nod in support. But I am with you. And I thank you for the stand you are taking. Peace, friend."

Hi Rachel,
I really enjoy your blog. Good thoughts. Look forward to seeing you soon.

That is cool.
It's never a bad thing when a man in uniform winks at you.
