the fortunate ones

What is a cajun restaurant doing in a place like Edmonton, Alberta, Canada? Serving up dee-lish-ious food that's what.

But what is this same cajun restaurant doing serving fortune cookies? Don't know the answer to that. But not long ago, after enjoying an amazing meal of etouffee (accompanied by an outstanding chili lager brewed by a local Albertan brewery), these were the fortunes that awaited us:

His: You will make a change for the better within the year.
Mine: Prepare yourself for a change of events in your personal life.

hmm...

Rev. Rachel (or Rachel Rev, as her housemates call her) is the planter/visionary pastor of Wind of Peace Church, a progressive new church start-up in Chicago's South Loop neighborhood, steps from downtown. In addition, Rachel is a consultant and community organizer for The Interfaith Alliance. So yes, Rachel has, not one, but two jobs, that give her the opportunity to work for justice and to share the news that life - and the world - can be radically different. Rachel is also a musician, a singer/songwriter who enjoys finding ways to wrap up bits of her spirituality and politics into 3-4 minutes of melodic beauty, harmonic transcendence, and groovy guitar licks. Unfortunately, Rachel has only been playing guitar for two years, and she hasn't quite nailed the guitar licks yet. However, she does like writing songs and singing pretty. When not preaching on street corners (Wind of Peace doesn't have a building - or even a congregation - yet), working in the community, or singing about God and the world, Rachel enjoys reading, knitting, peace activism, writing, karaoke, Sudoku, yoga, old bookstores, baseball (she's a lifelong Astros fan), and exploring the Windy City. Rachel holds degrees from Baylor University and Princeton Theological Seminary. Sometimes her arms get tired, and she can't hold them up any longer, and then she has to hang the diplomas on her wall or put them in storage. But she is working on her upper body strength.

Oh, for the record...

...I don't pretend to have all of the answers. I am just another seeker on a spiritual quest, wanting to share my thoughts, ask my questions, and hopefully spark some conversations. If you disagree with anything I write, say something. I imagine I have much more to learn from you that you do from me. So challenge me. Ask questions. And let's see if we can't find answers together.
