What in God's Name?

So, watching the Republican debate last night, I kept hearing people invoke the name of "God" - to justify bad science, in this case (and in previous statements, to justify discrimination in marriage and the military and to justify an unjust war). As I watched, I just kept wondering, "Who is this God they are talking about?" Because it certainly isn't any God I know.

Aside from all of the yucky "Christian nation" implications (Romney, in defending his Mormon faith, actually said he believed as most American's believe "in God...in the Bible...that Jesus Christ is [his] personal savior"), aside from that, the candidates kept saying, "He", and referring to "Him". And my God doesn't have a gender.

And if God does, She most certainly ain't a dude.

I watched a tiny bit of the show with the democratic nominees on Monday, but alas, no cable so I couldn't watch them all. Disturbing stereotypes about religion were spewing forth, though, from your account of Tuesday's show. Sigh---it looks like your church is counteracting many of those stereotypes!

I am part of a new church start in Berkeley, CA (though not the church planter), so I loved seeing your blog.
